Five reasons to dig through last years photo archive and five photography competitions to enter the golden frames into.
2019 is already rapidly warming up for the year and amongst a million other thoughts most likely beginning with where the heck did the last 2018 go, if you’re reading this you probably took some ripping snaps in the last twelve months. Chances are the majority of those images were only ever seen by your Instagram following, and lucky them, but think about all the other thousands of eyes, they deserve to see your National Geographic worthy journey pics.
A perfect platform to get your work out there is to enter your images into photography competitions, and there are hundreds out there. Most of the National Geographic photography competitions have closed for their rounds, but you have probably already heard of National Geographic before, maybe. Below is a list of competitions that are still open* for entry this late into the year and not quite as well known as the yellow-spined travel photographers bible.
*Open at time of publication.
So dive deep in your Lacie Rugged and fire up the lightbox to pore over those negs. Here is a list of just some of the photography competitions you should enter. Ranging in entry price from zero to a small amount of money with prices up to $50,000, it’s probably worth it. Bonne Chance!
Aperture is a non-profit community of photographers and writers who have had their finger on the shutter pulse since 1952. They are now a multi platform publisher of all things photography and the portfolio prize calls for relatively unseen photo essays that shed light on contemporary photography trends in a unique and innovative way. There is no entry fee but it is only open to subscribers to the Aperture print magazine. Whilst this might seem cheeky, it’s also superb value as you’ll get four print issues, a sign up bonus issue and the photobook review.

Australias richest photo prize dishes up a 50k prize package to the winner who best captures the day to day contemporary Australian life. There’s 30k in runners up prizes and youth and student categories as well. Unfortunately only open to Australian residents but without a doubt a competition worth entering. Judged and critiqued by some of Australia’s leading artists including Bill Henson, don’t miss out on this year’s Moran Contemporary.
Deadline: March 6th 2019
Prize: Grand prize 50,000AUD
Entries have closed for the 2018 competition but I had to include this one as it’s perfectly unique and as funny as the title suggests. Rhinoceros with a peacock skirt, a polar bear framing up a shot with a Nikon zoom lens, a squirrel re-enacting the Van Damme Volvo ad, it’s basically the creme de la creme of your favourite Facebook animal posts. Just to iterate one more time, this is a photography competition – for funny animal photos – What a wonderful world.
Prize: A week-long safari in Kenya.
